Things are starting to point towards the possibility that Luke could be turning evil or dark in the new Star Wars movie “The Last Jedi”. What does this mean for the franchise?
In a recent ScreenRant article, it is suggested that the recent leaks for Star Wars: The Last Jedi suggest that Luke Skywalker could become an antagonist in the movie. This is an interesting angle as they take it a little farther than my Luke as a “grey Jedi” thoughts. They’re suggesting that Luke could become more aligned towards the dark side and even anti Resistance/Rey.
This is quite interesting as the writer Alex Leadbeater sources this information from leaks from the new Star Wars film’s promotional material. There is reportedly an interesting promotional poster that has the villains (Kylo Ren, Snoke, Captain Phasma, etc.) with Luke Skywalker in a darker Jedi robe over the top of them, much in the way that Kylo Ren was in the promotional material for Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
This may be a bunch of smoke by the marketing team for the new Star Wars film. However, Alex mentions that when you take this into the fact that Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker) didn’t necessarily agree with the direction that film director Rian Johnson’s direction for his character, it makes you think of things a little differently.
In my opinion, this sets up for an extremely interesting twist to a movie that most fans won’t see coming. This isn’t your “Empire Strikes Back” redux, this is set up to be a completely different film that throws fans for a whole different adventure. That is great for the Star Wars franchise, combine that with the unknown allegiances of Benicio Del Toro’s character sets up for something we haven’t seen before.
It also changes the whole dynamic of Good vs. Evil or Light vs. Dark. Interesting enough, Alex mentions that Luke still remains the #1 enemy of the First Order as Supreme Leader Snoke and Kylo Ren tell us in The Force Awakens. However, with Luke not necessarily aligned with the Jedi way and not aligned with the Resistance, it sets the film up for a whole new level of intrigue.
Not only does it add another level of intrigue for this movie, I think it opens the possibilities for the next film and sets up for a redemption story for the final film of this trilogy. I also believe that this idea will create more publicity for the film. This will allow the constant ingestion of trailers, teasers, toys, and other promotional materials. This will also just add gasoline to the fire for myself and other Star Wars fans who can’t wait to see the film.
To create more coverage here for this fantastic upcoming film, I would like to start up something called “Star Wars Fan Theory Thursdays”. This is where I will take fan theories for the upcoming film and dissect them. I value fan interaction and would love to hear what your favorite theories are about the new movie. Let me know, if you have a theory you would like to hear fleshed out!
